Vision and Hearing Screening
The Hearing and Vision Screening will be held on Monday, April 14th and Tuesday, April 15th, 8:00 AM - 2:15 PM. Volunteers are needed both days to record data. If you would like to volunteer for any amount of time on either day, please contact Becky Brown at 410-313-5545 or rbrown@hcpss.org.

The GT Parent Academy Meeting is on April 15th at 7:00 PM at the Faulkner Ridge Center in Columbia. This session will focus on The Howard County Public System's G/T Education Program: Moving from Good to Great with special guest, Mr. Robert Glascock, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology. The GT Orientation Meeting for Incoming 6th Grade Parents is next Thursday, April 17th in the Media Center from 7:00 PM - 7:45 PM. Parents will learn about the GT Content Area classes, the GT Research Class, and enrichment opportunities for all students.
The GT Enrichment Fair is on Thursday, May 8th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM in the GT Room, Computer Lab, and Media Center. Students who worked on GT enrichment projects will showcase their work and demonstrate programs using technology. Confirmation letters must be returned to Mrs. Quinn by next week.
UMBC's Center for Women and Information Technology will be hosting its 6th Annual Computer Mania Day on Saturday, May 3rd. This event is includes technology-related activities for middle school students, their parents, teachers, and community members. Students will enjoy hands-on, interactive workshops focused on technology and engineering and run by women role models in industry and research. It's Linguistic! A Celebration of World Languages! An event in game show format where beginning French and Spanish students from across the district demonstrate their knowledge of the target language and culture. It will be held at Burleigh Manor Middle School on Saturday, April 19th, 8:30 AM -1:00 PM. Please RSVP Brenda Myrick at 410-313-6841. Congratulations to Alison Venooker. Alison's poster will be featured in the Howard County Office of Human Rights Fair Housing Month Poster Showcase at The Mall in Columbia. The Grand Opening of the exhibit is Friday, April 18th. Posters will be on display through Sunday, April 27th.
Good luck to Claire Fremuth, Vivian Tu, Danielle Frazier, Emily Liang, and Greta Ostergaard. They will be representing Mount View at the French language competition, It's Linguistic, on April 19th.

Transition Fair for Middle School Families -- Want to know more about transition and community supports for people with disabilities? HCPSS Middle and High School staff will provide information about high school and community programs available to your child after graduation. Korean American Health Fair will be held Saturday, April 26 at Centennial High School from 12 Noon to 4:30 PM. Services will be offered FREE of charge for hearing and vision screening, clinical breast exam, skin analyzer screening, blood pressure screening, dental screenng for children, bone density screenng glucose and cholesterol screening. Health education information will be available on mental health and diabetes. Health Fair is sponsored by Howard County General Hospital with co-sponsorships from Ellicott City Horizon Council, Howard County Health Department and the Korean American Community Associaition.

The Columbia Association's Teen Advisory Committee is sponsoring a College Fair on Saturday, May 3rd from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. The event will be held at Kahler Hall in Columbia. Representatives from colleges and universities across the country will be present to help area teens explore the wide range of options available to them after high school. The Columbia Association's Middle School Advisory Committee will host Spring Fling, a free middle school social open to all Howard County middle school students on Friday, May 2, 2008, from 7 - 9 p.m. The event will take place at Kahler Hall in Harper's Choice, 5440 Old Tucker Row in Columbia. The Columbia Association will hold a Teen Talent Contest on Friday, April 25th from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at the Teen Center in Oakland Mills in Columbia. EduSerc - Educators Serving the Community, is hosting its summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program open house on Wednesday, April 30th from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland will hold their Daisy Day Program on Saturday, May 17th from 12:30 PM -4:00 PM at Clementine Peterson Activity Center/GS Camp Ilchester. Activities will include songs, games, crafts, learning about the Girl Scouts and about how to join a Girl Scout Troop in the fall. Girl Scout Troop #3316 and the Pointers Run ES PTA will hold a blood drive on May 1st from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the school's cafeteria in Clarksville. Trauma victims, premature infants, cancer patients and many others rely on a safe and adequate blood supply to survive. It is important for the community blood supply to be constantly replenished to ensure that blood is available for every patient when they need it. Howard County Animal Control will hold a Be Kind to Animals celebration on Saturday, May 10th from 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM in Columbia. On Saturday, April 12th the Howard County Autism Society and AMC Theatres at Columbia Mall will have a showing of "Nim's Island" for families with special needs. There will be no trailers, the volume will be kept down and the lights will be kept up. Children are encouraged to take sensory breaks and all families and friends with special needs are welcome. All showings will start at 9:30 AM. Doors open at 8:45 AM. The cost is $6 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The Howard County Poetry and Literature Society will present a free panel discussion called "Racism in America: 1968 - 2008" commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. The panel will include distinguished authors and activists as well as a decade-by-decade account of African-American history. The event will take place at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 27th at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in Columbia.
The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland will hold a two-mile walk around Lake Elkhorn in Columbia, on Sunday, May 4th. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM and the walk will start at 9:00 AM. Call for Nominations for SECAC's 10th Annual Staff Appreciation & Recognition Night: The Special Education Community Advisory Committee (SECAC) invites you to nominate a teacher or other staff member who you think has most significantly enhanced your child's educational experience by providing excellence in teaching and related services. Nominees may be teachers, bus drivers, guidance counselors, psychologists, administrators, occupational, physical and speech therapists or other staff members. SECAC will only accept nominations from parents, guardians or students. You may nominate either two staff members per child or a child's team. If nominating a team, you need to supply the names all of the team members.
For nominations of individual staff members, please describe (50-200 words) some action, attitude approach that you feel made that individual stand out at making an exceptional difference to your child's experience or education.
For team nominations, please describe (50 - 400 words) how the team has worked together to provide an exceptional educational experience. Kindly avoid writing a separate citation for each team member. |

The Dorsey Search Dolphins Swim Team will hold a Kickoff Splash Down Party on Saturday, May 10th from 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM at the swim center. Bring a friend!
