Student Recognition

Congratulations to Cathryn Apted, Ben Klawson, Jinwoo Lee and Katie Nelson. Their outstanding artwork from the Mall '08 Exhibition has been chosen to be displayed at the Board of Education and Faulkner Ridge Gallery in Howard County, State Department of Education in Baltimore, the Maryland Treasury Building and State House in Annapolis beginning this summer. It will also be displayed at the Tunnel Show in Annapolis during the legislative session. If you are visiting these places during the summer, take a minute to look at our MV students' outstanding artwork.

Outdoor Education

All medications and medical order forms for students attending the 6th grade ODE field trip to Camp Letts are due to the Health room no later than Friday May 2nd! Please DO NOT SEND medication to school with your child.

    The GT Enrichment Fair is on Thursday, May 8th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM in the Media Center, GT Room, and Computer Lab. Students who worked on GT enrichment projects will showcase their work and demonstrate programs using technology. See Mrs. Quinn's webiste for more details about the schedule that night.

Howard County Library invites you to a Choose Civility Symposium, featuring keynote speaker former Baltimore Colts defensive lineman and co-founder of Building Men and Women for Others, Joe Ehrmann. Ehrmann will emphasize how empathy, integrity and relationships are more important than anything else in life. Breakout sessions on civility in school, workplace and community will follow. Crossroads Church of the Nazarene will hold their Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Camp June 23rd ? 27th. Participants will develop their basketball and cheerleading skills under the guidance of Cameron Mills, member of the 1998 University of Kentucky National Championship team. The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is now accepting registrations for the 2008 season of the Ellicott City Patriots Football and Cheerleading Programs. The Howard County Library will kick off its Summer Reading Celebration with a 2.5 mile fun run/walk at 8:00 AM on Saturday, June 7th at the East Columbia Branch Library in Columbia. The cost is $20 per person and $50 for a family of up to four people. There will be an additional cost of $10 for each additional person. All proceeds will benefit Friends of Howard County Library. The National Family Resiliency Center is sponsoring the Childrens' Resource Fair on Sunday, April 27th from 10:00 AM ? 3:00 PM. The event, featuring resources for families with children facing separation/divorce, will take place at KS White Tiger Martial Arts in Highland. On-site childcare services will be available. Our Waters & Our Role from a Global & Local Perspective, will be presented by HoCoH2O at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 29th at the Jim Rouse Theatre at Wilde Lake High School. The Stressless Tests Program will offer spring and summer study skills classes. Spring High School Study Skills classes: April 23rd - May 14th, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM, Centennial High School. Spring Middle School Study Skills classes: Tuesday afternoons, April 22nd - May 13th; 3:45 PM - 5:45 PM and 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM; Burleigh Manor Middle School. Summer Study Skills - 5-day course. High School classes start the weeks of August 4th and 11th, from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. Middle School classes begin the weeks of July 28th, August 4th and 11th, from 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM, at Centennial High School. The Cedar Lane School PTA is sponsoring its 11th annual "Walk for our Stars" fund-raiser at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 26th. The event will take place at Maple Lawn Community Center in Fulton. The Columbia Association's Teen Advisory Committee is sponsoring a College Fair on Saturday, May 3rd from 12:00 PM ? 2:00 PM. The event will be held at Kahler Hall in Columbia. Representatives from colleges and universities across the country will be present to help area teens explore the wide range of options available to them after high school. The Columbia Association's Middle School Advisory Committee will host Spring Fling, a free middle school social open to all Howard County middle school students on Friday, May 2, 2008, from 7 - 9 p.m. The event will take place at Kahler Hall in Harper's Choice in Columbia. EduSerc - Educators Serving the Community, is hosting its summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program open house on Wednesday, April 30th from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. Parents and educators are welcome to attend. Programs will be available for elementary, middle and high school students. Several sessions are being offered from June 7th - August 23rd. The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland will hold their Daisy Day Program on Saturday, May 17th from 12:30 PM ?4:00 PM at Clementine Peterson Activity Center/GS Camp Ilchester. Activities will include songs, games, crafts, learning about the Girl Scouts and about how to join a Girl Scout Troop in the fall. Girl Scout Troop #3316 and the Pointers Run ES PTA will hold a blood drive on May 1st from 4:00 PM ? 8:00 PM in the school's cafeteria in Clarksville. Trauma victims, premature infants, cancer patients and many others rely on a safe and adequate blood supply to survive. It is important for the community blood supply to be constantly replenished to ensure that blood is available for every patient when they need it. Howard County Animal Control will hold a Be Kind to Animals celebration on Saturday, May 10th from 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM in Columbia. The Howard County Poetry and Literature Society will present a free panel discussion called "Racism in America: 1968 - 2008" commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. The panel will include distinguished authors and activists as well as a decade-by-decade account of African-American history. The event will take place at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 27th at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in Columbia.

The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland will hold a two-mile walk around Lake Elkhorn in Columbia, on Sunday, May 4th. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM and the walk will start at 9:00 AM. Dogs are welcome to participate. The fundraising event is free and open to the public. Register online at www.kidneymd.org.
