From Mrs. Quinn, GT Resource Teacher:
GT Research Class for 6th graders: If your 6th grade child is currently in "two or more GT classes", a letter was sent home last week about an optional GT Research course. during the RA sequence. The registration form has to be returned to the Mrs. Quinn by Friday, September 28th. Space is limited.

Instructional Seminars: Students who would like to participate in a GT Instructional Seminar at CORE this semester must complete an application and interview. See Mrs. Quinn's website for more details.

GT Parent Academies: The first GT Parent Academy Meeting will include an Overview of the GT Program. It is especially for the School GT Representatives but interested parents are invited to attend. This meeting is on Tuesday, October 2nd at the Faulkner Ridge Center from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. For more information, visit hcpss.org/gt/parent_academy.shtml

Attention 8th graders! If you would like to have your baby photo included in this year's Memory Book you need to bring in your photo by Wednesday, October 31st. We also need a current photo. Both photos should be about 4x6 in size and high quality. For more information, see Mrs. Quinn's website.

Community News

Howard County Recreation and Parks Fall 2007 Recreational Youth Volleyball League for grades 6 - 8. The 6 week program begins on Saturday, October 6th at the Glenwood Community Center is Cooksville. . The cost to play is $75. Walt Mueller, President and Founder of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (www.cpyu.org) will present "Understanding the Teenage World", at Chapelgate Church on Friday, October 5th, from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM and Saturday, October 6th, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The Columbia Teen Center will hold their 5th Annual "Hear My Voice" Teen Idol Competition at the Columbia Lakefront on Saturday, October 13th, from 4:00 PM. to 7:00 PM. The fun-filled evening will include a talent competition, cool prize giveaways, live bands, and a new iPod for the Columbia Teen Idol winner! Auditions will be held on Monday, September 24th and Thursday, September 27th at the Columbia Teen Center in the Oakland Mills Village Center. Call 410-992-3726 to register for the audition.

The Howard County Public School System and the Learning Disabilities Association of America are co-sponsoring "Social and Emotional Problems Often Seen with Individuals with Learning Disabilities." Dr. Larry B. Silver, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University will review the literature of what is called "a continuum of neurologically-based disorders" often found with individuals who have learning disabilities. The event will take place on Monday, October 1st from 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM at Reservoir High School in Fulton. Admission is free. The "One Step Closer" Autism Walk 2007 will take place on Saturday, October 13th at Centennial Park in Ellicott City. Registration will begin at 9:00 AM and the walk will begin at 10:00 AM. The walk is a great chance for families, individuals, and groups to have lots of fun and show support for a good cause. There will be many opportunities to meet other families in the community, become familiar with local businesses and service providers interested in the cause and most of all have fun! The first annual "Farm City-Healthy Howard Family Walk" will take place on Saturday, September 29th, from 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM at Clarks Elioak Farm in Ellicott City. Join Howard County families for a FREE Family Walk through a local farm. Introduce your family to the history and importance of farming in Howard County while having fun, enjoying physical activity, nutrition education, special booths and activities along the way! Registration begins at 8:15 AM; walk begins at 8:30AM; last walker admitted at 9:30AM; petting zoo and hayrides open at 10:30 AM (fee). Registration is free and available at the door. The Western Howard County Youth Basketball league is currently accepting registrations for their 2007 - 2008 winter program. Registration forms and information can be found on their website at www.whcybasketball.com or by calling 410-489-0351.

Howard County Youth Program is currently accepting registrations for their 2007 - 2008 Winter Girls and Boys Basketball Program. Go to www.hcyp.org to register. Click on the "Register Now!" link next to "Basketball" and follow the instructions. Once completed you will be immediately registered for HCYP Basketball.
